Seal Beach Residents Strongly Oppose Proposed I-405 Freeway Expansion

Interstate 405 is one of Southern California's most travelled freeways, and, as a result, it sees very heavy traffic. Relieving this congestion may not be so easy, however, as the Orange County Transportation Authority has met strong opposition from Seal Beach residents for two of the proposed freeway expansion plans, according to The Orange County Register.

The goal of the freeway widening project is to lessen traffic by widening the I-405 between the 73 Toll Road and the I-605 using potential revenue from the proposed express lanes and Measure M2, which was approved by voters. The various plan alternatives involve the addition of lanes, either one or two, in each direction, although the third alternative also involves the creation of a toll express lane that would work with the carpool lane.

Seal Beach residents are opposed to at least two of these plans as it would mean the encroachment of the freeway into residential neighborhoods. Although the current plans do not involve the seizure of residential property through eminent domain, the freeway expansion would involve the moving of a sound wall further into residential neighborhoods, taking away available parking, as well as decreasing property values. Just because residential homes do not currently have to worry about being taken by the power of eminent domain, that does not mean businesses will be so lucky. According to The Contra Costa Times, there would be one to four full business purchases.
