When it came time to replace an iconic Sixth Street viaduct bridge that spans the gap between Boyle Heights and Downtown Los Angeles, those involved knew that it would take political will and extensive input from the public - not an easy task. It would take the combined effort of architects, designers, artists, politicians and the Bureau of Engineering to get the project off the ground.
Jose Huizar, Councilman representing the 14th district not only had to contend with residents, landowners and business owners who would be most impacted by the three-year, $401 million construction project, but he also had to deal with history and identity. The bridge, which has been featured in countless movie, television and commercial projects, in many ways represents Los Angeles to the outside world.
It would have to be something unique.
Architectural design firm, HNTB won the design contest with a bridge plan that includes sweeping arches as tall as 60 feet and 10 feet wide. Two of the arches have stairs that ascend the arch above the bridge deck to provide a spectacular view of the city. To the west of the river a public plaza is planned. Local artist Glenn Kaino has been tapped to provide art design for the project.
"Critical design elements associated with creating such a unique structure have been solved, and along with our artist selection, dedicated bike lanes, improved pedestrian access and walkability, as well as our commitment to support the funding for a soccer field, tells the public this bridge is going to be special," Huizar said in a press release.
Construction on the bridge has been slated to start this fall, with completion projected to be in late 2018. If you want to take a look at the project you can click here.
