Purple Line Subway Extension Underway

Earlier this year, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) staff awarded the Purple Line subway extension contract, valued at around $1.6 billion, to a joint venture composed of three of the world's top construction companies. The project had been in the preliminary stages of planning and environmental analysis for four years before finally receiving full approval. On November 7, 2014, at a ceremony on Wilshire Boulevard, Metro officially broke ground on the Purple Line Extension.

The Purple Line Extension will start from the current station at Wilshire/Western and extend westward for approximately nine miles, with stops at major intersections throughout west LA, including Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, Wilshire/La Cienega, Wilshire/Rodeo, Westwood/UCLA and Westwood/VA Hospital. New stations will be built in Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills, Century City and Westwood.

Though the line is slated for completion in 2023, Metro may accelerate the property acquisition and construction process through the America Fast Forward Initiative. Hundreds of properties along the Wilshire corridor could be affected by the Purple Line subway extension, including property acquisitions by the government's power of eminent domain.
